AIMS Games begin in Tauranga

IALA:AIMS Games begin in Tauranga

Today I was reading about AIMS Games begin in Tauranga and that New Zealand’s largest sporting tournament for Intermediate aged students has started in Tauranga.

This year 10,139 students from around New Zealand will take part in the AIMS Games.

These students come from 303 schools competing in 22 sports, including para sport for the first time. The numbers easily surpass last year’s record entries of 9300 athletes from 271 schools.

There are 10 schools flying in to compete from Tonga, Cook Islands, Australia and for the first time, Indonesia. AIMS Games tournament director Vicky Semple said this year the games will be a massive event.

To cater to the huge numbers there were two opening ceremonies on Sunday – another first for the AIMS Games. An economic impact study found last year’s tournament injected more than $3m into the Western Bay of Plenty. Ms Semple said 71 new schools registered to compete this year, which meant some teams were having to stay in Waihi Beach and Rotorua and travel to venues each day.
